North Shelby Elementary
Title I Schoolwide Program
North Shelby Elementary places great emphasis on reading. As part of our reading program all Kindergarten-third grade students receive 90-120 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction each day. We ask parents to support the program by assuring students arrive on time every day and avoid any personal interruptions during the reading block.
Kindergarten–third grade students are placed in Tier reading groups based on Acadience Reading, Reading Inventory (RI), and core assessment scores. Tier II students are given an additional 30 minutes of small group reading instruction, and Tier III students an additional 60 minutes. Fourth-sixth grade students needing additional assistance in communication arts, based on Acadience Reading and RI data, receive small group instruction.
Kindergarten-sixth grade students, identified as needing extra support in math based on Acadience Math, Math Seeds, and core assessments, receive small group instruction. In addition to Tier II and III reading groups and math intervention groups, our students may participate in early morning study hall, after school tutoring, and/or summer tutoring. Alternative Intervention Strategies (AIS) meetings take place each semester, as well. Teachers may place students at risk of not meeting MLS on the list of students to discuss at AIS meetings to ensure we are doing every possible intervention at our disposal for those children before referring them for diagnostic testing.
By identifying struggling students in the early grades, we are able to intervene quickly and offer the support needed to help them be successful in school and in life. Our staff works collaboratively toward ensuring that all students are working at grade level in both reading and math.
To assist preschool children in the transition from early childhood education programs to the elementary, North Shelby Elementary hosts a “Getting Ready for Kindergarten” event each spring to help students prepare for Kindergarten entry. Our Parents as Teachers educator actively works with parents to assist them in equipping their children for school. The district also works with First Steps and Head Start to ensure a smooth transition into preschool and Kindergarten.
New teachers and paraprofessionals receive structured literacy training and/or in depth LETRS training to maintain consistency in teaching reading across all grade levels. Teachers participate in curriculum work and professional development opportunities to ensure learning opportunities are aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards. Data is used to guide instruction in the classroom, as well as small groups and interventions. On-going technology training for teachers to successfully incorporate web-based programs, assessments, and STEM instruction is provided.
The North Shelby School District maintains competitive salaries with nearby school districts to recruit and retain effective teachers. Celebrating and recognizing outstanding staff accomplishments is also prioritized.
